The Michigan Peach Festival of Romeo runs from Aug. 28 through Labor Day, and offers several new activities this year to keep the event fresh. Among the new events this year is Harley Night, which replaces Romeo Idol, at Romeo Lions Field on Aug. 28. Gary Schocke, Peach Festival president, said he expected the new events, along with other traditional events, to come off nicely. I think everything is going to turn out OK, he said. The car show, the craft show, the fly-in - we expect a very good weekend. Schocke said during the 5-day weekend, depending on the weather, the festival can expect approximately 200,000 to 300,000 visitors. It is a family event, he said. We get a lot of families and kids out to the carnival, the car show, the craft show, even to the different sporting events like the softball and tennis tournaments. Schocke said the event couldnt happen without all the hard work of area volunteers, especially from groups like the Lions Club. We get 30 or 40 guys who work really hard on the festival, getting the field ready, getting the car show ready, he said. There is a lot of work to be done. There are a lot of people that participate to make sure everything happens. The 2008 Romeo Peach Queen, Cortney Spiegel, said she has enjoyed her summer as Peach Queen, but said she is really looking forward to the Peach Festival. Ive enjoyed all the parades, all the towns around us. That has been a lot of fun, she said. I want to meet as many people as I can. That is my goal, pretty much.
