Gary Schocke has been involved with the Peach Festival for almost 30 years.

This year will be the first time he has served as the annual Floral Parade’s grand marshal.

“I’m really very honored,” he said. “There have been some great people who have been there before me.”

Schocke, who is leaving the office of Bruce Township supervisor in November, has been actively involved in the community for approximately 30 years.

Currently Schocke is a member of the Romeo Goodfellows and Romeo Lions, is a commissioner for the Parks and Recreation Department and is a member of the Tri-Community Cable Commission.

Schocke said his time with the Romeo Lions and Romeo Goodfellows is something that evolved for him over the years, as he has served both groups in varying capacities.

“I’ve been doing it for years,” he said. “They are very charitable.”

When Schocke leaves office, he said he still plans to continue his work with these groups and in the community.

“It’s a great honor and privilege,” he said.

Ron Rossell, who picked Schocke as the grand marshal with his wife Mindy and daughter Holly, the co-chairs of the Floral Parade Committee, said Schocke was selected for his commitment to the community.

“He has been supervisor of Bruce Township for 28 years,” said Rossell, a trustee in the village of Romeo. “He has been president of the Michigan Peach Festival Association for about 18 years. He has been very active, shoulder to shoulder in volunteer work. He was selected because of the amount of work he gives to the community.”

The 2008 Peach Festival Floral Parade starts at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 1 on Main Street. For more information about the Floral Parade, call 739-9080.
